The following is a partial listing of scholarships made available each year to high school and college students.  This list is not exhaustive and criteria and/or deadlines may change without notice.  It is the responsibility of the student to verify all scholarships prior to applying.  Scholarships in black have been updated for the 2012-2013 school year.  Scholarships in brown have NOT been verified for this current school year.  This color coding is done for your convenience.  Check the list regularly for updates.

Eligibility: Seniors interested in ministry, participate in school athletic programs, and demonstrate leadership and good moral character

5.  George Washington Carver Scholastic Scholarship: (www.nps.gov/gwca)

Eligibility:  Be pursuing study in one of the following disciplines:  Science, Art, Agriculture, Music or Bible, attend an accredited college within 100 miles of George Washington Carver National Monument or attend Iowa State University or Tuskegee University.  If selected as a finalist, applicants must complete an interview.

Amount:  $250 per semester

6.  Linda Ekiss Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility:  Any Southwest Missouri graduating student or post-secondary student with learning disabilities who can meet post-secondary entrance requirements.

Amount:  $500

8.  Daybreak Rotary Club Scholarship

Criteria:  Demonstrate academic ability, involved in community or school extracurricular activities, and financial need.  Applications available in the Guidance Office

9.  Eagle Picher Scholarship Program

Criteria: Dependent of Eagle Picher employee or retired employee; senior with a minimum cumulative 3.0 PGA on a 4.0 scale planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational-technical school.  Applications available in the Guidance Office.

Amount:  $3,000

Deadline:  March 31

 

10.  Students For Life Scholarship (Community Blood Center of the Ozarks)

Criteria:  High school seniors who are involved in the organization of their high school blood drives; submit a participation sheet and essay

Amount: $500 (40 available)

Deadline:  Apply between January 1 and March 25

 

11.  The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award Program

Criteria:  Female, between 14-17 years old, having demonstrated initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it; having had significant and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer

Amount:  varies, up to $1000

Criteria:  Go to the website, click on “scholarships”, from the pull-down menu, select Joplin-College Heights Christian School” and search.  You will be directed to numerous scholarships with varying criteria

13.  Fraternal Order of Police – Regional SW MO Lodge #27

Criteria:  Must graduate with a minimum 3.0 GPA; submit a 500-word essay; plan on entering a criminal justice or law enforcement program of education

Amount:  $1000 (four available)

Deadline:  February 5, 2013

1.  Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Youth leadership program sponsored by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.  TLT provides an opportunity to learn more about the area and the importance of community service.  TLT brings students together with business and community leaders to identify and discuss community issues, leadership, and career opportunities; five sessions

Criteria:  Senior, outstanding academically, effective leader in community and/or school activities with an interest in furthering his/her knowledge of the Joplin region.

Deadline:  September 17, 2012 (interviews will be held at CHCS)

 

2.  Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Criteria:  Recognizes students for volunteering service in their communities.  Complete an online application and submit to Mr. Lewis by November 1, 2012.  Application can be found at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential.  When asked for the access key, type the word “spirit”.  A committee will review all applications submitted and select two Local Honorees and up to four runners-up.  The top high school volunteer in each state is named State Honoree in February, and two to ten runners-up in each state are named Distinguished finalists.  Ten of the State honorees are named America’s top youth volunteers of the year at a ceremony in Washington D.C. in May.

Amount:  State Honorees receive $1000, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington D.C.  National Honorees receive additional $5,000 awards, engraved gold medallions, and crystal trophies for their schools.  They also receive $5,000 grants for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

3.  Wendy’s High School Heisman Award

Criteria:  Students in the 2013 graduating class who have at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.  Apply at www.WendysHeisman.com.  Applicants should apply early because each online application must be reviewed and confirmed by a CHCS representative.

Amount:  varied amounts are awarded to the student’s school; first $25,000 applicants receive a $10 Wendy’s gift

Deadline:  Online application by October 2, 2012

 

4.  Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest

Criteria:  Available to students in grades 9-12, prepare a 3-5 minute original essay and then record on an audio cassette.  Essays on assigned theme.  More information is available in the Guidance Office.

Deadline:  November

 

5.  Contest:  First Freedom Student Competition

Criteria:  National essay/video contest open to students in grades 9-12.  For online registration and more details on the completion visit www.firstfreedom.org and then click on the red button under Council News

Amount:  $2,500 (essay) and $2,500 (video)

Deadline:  November 12, 2012

 

6.  Contest:  What Patriotism Means to Me

Criteria:  Students in grades 7-12.  Essay contest of 350 words.  For more information go to www.fra.org/essay.

Amount:  Grand prize of $10,000 savings bond; plus 18 National Awards and Regional and Local Prizes

Deadline:  December 1

 

7.  Oratorical Scholarship Program – A Constitutional Speech Contest (American Legion Scholarship Programs: www.missourilegion.org)

Purpose:  The purpose of this contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution on part of the high school student.  Other objectives include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties, responsibilities, and rights and privileges of American citizenship.

Criteria:  Prepare an oration over an assigned topic.  All contestants must be U.S. citizens.

Amount: $1,400-$14,000 depending on state or national ranking

8.  Ayn Rand Essay Contests: (www.aynrand.org/contests)

This is not a scholarship, but the prizes are large – up to $10,000.  See the website for information and entry forms.

9.  NFIB Young Entreprenuer Award

Criteria:  Demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit including, but not limited to starting a small business, participation in organizations such as DECA, FBLA, Junior Achievement and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship; working part-time at a family-owned or other small business

Amount:  $1,000-$10,000

10.  C.O.M.P. (Creating Original Music Project) – University of Missouri

Criteria:  Open to Missouri students, grades K-12; all entries must be original music written by the student. For application and additional information, please visit http://music.missouri.edu/COMP

Awards:  Winning composers and their schools will be awarded cash prizes

Deadline:  Postmark of January 4

 

11. Robert J. Stuckey Essay Contest

Criteria:  Open to 9th-12th grade students; write an essay between 1200-1500 words addressing one or more aspects of books and reading.  One essay per school is allowed.

Awards:  1st place - $1500; 2nd place - $750; 3rd place – 250

Deadline:  Submit your essay to the Guidance Office by January 17, 2013 to be considered

6.  Danforth Scholars Program (Washington University, St.Louis, MO)

Criteria:  Senior with outstanding academic performance and exceptional commitment to community service, leadership and personal achievements that set the student apart from his or her peers.  An individual who has substantive knowledge of the student’s dedication to community and academic life must nominate the student.  When a student has been nominated, the nomination committee will notify the student and provide application materials, which must be returned by January 15.  The nominator must submit the appropriate form with a letter of nomination by October 15.  Interested students see Mrs. Kruse in the Guidance Office.

7.  The Chancellor’s Scholarship, Missouri S&T (formerly MU at Rolla)

Criteria:  Upper 10% of class after six semesters or have a GPA of 3.75 or better; or ACT score of 30 by October test date; strong leadership skills through school and community activities; resident of Missouri

1.  John Dennis Scholarship

2.  Missouri Insurance Education Foundation

Eligibility:  must enroll full-time at an accredited Missouri college or university and pursue a career in insurance, risk management, or actuarial university and pursue a career in insurance, risk management, or actuarial science, which is a math-related career involving probability and statistics.

3.  Access Missouri Scholarship

Eligibility:  US citizen, based on family income, full time student, renewal GPA of 2.5, have an EFC of <12,000 as determined by FAFSA, not pursuing a religious degree

4.  Bright Flight

Eligibility:  enrolled in public MO college, 31+ACT or SAT Verbal of 780 and Math 790

5.  Missouri Health Professional Student Loan: (www.dhss.mo.gov/HealthProfStudentLoans/faq.html)

Eligibility:  Must be Missouri resident attending Missouri institution.  The nursing program you are attending must have a previous State Board of Nursing pass rate of at last 80%.  The loan can be forgiven by providing nursing/medical services in Missouri in an area of economic need.  The more years you serve, the more of the loan that is forgiven.  Download application online

Amount:  $2,500 for LPN students, $5,000 for professional nursing students, pre-med, pre-dental, and dental assistant.

6.  Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Scholarships

                A.  Missouri Teacher Education Scholarship

Criteria:  be a Missouri resident, be a high school senior, or a freshman, sophomore or returning adult student at a community college or at a four-year college or university in Missouri; rani in the top 15% of your high school class or score in the top 15% on ACT or SAT; attend an approved teacher education program at a four-year college or university in Missouri.  Recipients must remain enrolled in a four-year teacher education program and are required to teach in Missouri public schools for five years.  Otherwise, the scholarship converts to a loan and the state’s portion must be repaid.

Amount:  One time $2,000

                B.  The Missouri Minority Teaching Scholarship Program

Criteria:  Be a Missouri resident; be African American, Asian American, Hispanic American or Native American; rank in tht top 25% of your class and score in the top 25% on the ACT or SAT; be enrolled in a participating, approved teacher education program at a community college or four-year college or

7.  Department of Natural Resources Environmental Education Scholarship Program NOTE:  No Scholarship information was found in September, 2011.

Criteria:  Senior and Missouri resident with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, planning to enroll as a full-time student in a Missouri post-secondary institution.  Qualified candidates must be pursuing a degree in one of the following areas of study:  Civil, chemical, mechanical, agricultural engineering or environmental engineering, or environmental areas such as geology, biology, wildlife management, planning, some aspect of natural resource management or a closely related field.  Application process requires three letters of recommendation and a one-page essay explaining why this scholarship is desired.  Applications may be accessed online at www.dnr.mo.gov/hr/scholarship.htm

7.  Imagine America Scholarship

8.  Toyota Community Scholars Program

Criteria:  Seniors who enroll at a 4-year college or university.  GPA 3.0 or higher.  Be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and/or community.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Only one student may be nominated from CHCS each year.  More information is available at http://www.toyota.com/communityscholars.  Indicate your interest in this scholarship by writing a paragraph stating what you have done to impact the school and/or community in a positive way.  This should be turned in to the Guidance Office at least 2 weeks prior to the deadline.  Include information about a service organization you are actively involved in.  A committee will review all candidates to determine a nomination.

Amount:  varies from $1,000 - $50,000

47.  Buick Achievers Scholarship

Criteria:  Attend U.S. based accredited 4-year college or university for the entire 2012-13 school year; plan to major in a course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business related programs of study; based on academic achievement, financial need, leadership in community and school activities, work experience, interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industry; see www.buickachievers.com for more information

Amount:  1100 scholarships available from $2,000 - $25,000 renewable

Deadline:  Submit electronically by Feb. 28, 2013

 

48.  AES Engineers Scholarship

Criteria:  Based on character as determined by essay; must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words to answer the following question:  “What are your dreams for the future?  When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?”  Submit to scholarship@aesengineers.com

Amount:  $500.00
