TAX CREDIT
The After School Program received a 21st Century Learning program grant, but this can only be used for new academic programs, family involement activities and limited other activities. All other costs must be covered by the school district. The Tax Credit program makes it possible to keep this program open, allowing the utilization of the 21st Century Grant funds.
In 1997 the State Legislature passed a bill that allows an individual to deduct as a credit, fees paid to schools for extracurricular activities.
Specifically:
Allows a $200 state tax credit for any individual and $400.00 for a married couple.
This credit against any liability NOT a deduction from income. You get the $200.00 or $400.00 back or do not have to pay it, depending upon how you file.
The funds must be used towards extra curricular activities
Schools can accept unlimited funds
Any individual may donate up to $200 (a couple filing jointly may donate up to $400.00) to be paid as an extracurricular fee for the purpose of taking the tax credit. It is a transfer of revenue from the Department of Revenue to the local schools.
